Siemens have been manufacturing its AC drive systems developed for electric vehicles for many years and the it keep evolving in even better product. The reason BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Fiat, Opel and others using it is several fold:
- Extreme reliability. Because the systems built in Germany to DIN and ISO standards, Siemens guarantees ten years of reliable service, and there is no reason for the systems not to work longer than that. For instance first Simovert series inverters were installed by VW back in 1992. Many still work today, day in day out.
- Flexibility. Manufacturer listens to its customers and adopts the drive systems, especially electric motors, to their specifications and drive train requirements. Therefore we see variety of front flange styles and drive shafts  - with large enough OEM order, Siemens modifies it making bolt-in solution for particular vehicle. The same situation with electronics and especially drive software - company constantly refines systems improving performance. For instance Siemens developed thermodynamic models of its motors, which can be stored in inverter's memory. this allowed to maximize motors potential maximum performance before cutting current back the power. Compared with simple linear model decreasing supplied power with temperature rising, this allowed few more percent of overall performance increase just by refining software.
